Why does a walrus have tusks?
The great tusks of the male walrus are used in battle against other males. The winner of the fight gets to mate with all the females on the beach. The loser must haul himself off. A walrus can also use its tusks to dig clams out of the mud or to smash breathing holes in the ice. Tusks are also useful when a huge male, which can weigh over 3,530 lb. (1,600 kg), is trying to haul itself along the ice.
