What is a banyan tree?
The banyan tree is a type of fig that is found in India and Southeast Asia. It produces numerous long, trailing shoots from its spreading branches. When these reach the ground, they take root and form new trunks. These help stabilise the tree and enable it to spread. The largest-known specimen has some 1,775 supporting roots and a canopy area larger than a tennis court.
The vast array of supporting roots help prevent the banyan tree from falling over.
