Why is the Sun's energy so important?
As well as providing heat and light, the Sun causes the weather, which provides wind and water power. Solar panels heat water, and solar cells convert sunlight directly into electricity. Electricity can also be obtained from a generator driven by a windmill. In addition, the Sun's energy allows plants to grow, and the plants give energy to humans and animals when eaten. They can also be used as a fuel; coal was formed from plants millions of years ago.
About 30 percent of the sun's energy that reaches the earth's atmosphere passes through it, and so can be exploited as a source of power.
