How is sound energy measured?
|
The amount of energy in a sound wave depends on its intensity or loudness, measured in decibels. The quietest sound we can hear is given a value of 0 decibels (0 dB). The rustle of leaves has a loudness of 10 dB, and conversation is about 55 dB. Sounds over 100 dB begin to cause us pain. | | The loudness of a jet fighter's engines is 170 decibels, which is beyond the pain threshold. |
