How do thermometers work?
A liquid-in-glass thermometer has a bulb containing a liquid that expands along a graduated tube to show temperature. The pointer on a bimetallic thermometer moves along as two metals expand at different rates, causing the coil to tighten. The probe of a digital thermometer generates a small electric current as it gets hot.
Thermometers measure the degree of hotness of an object, which we call its temperature.
