How does a roller coaster work?
|
| The world's tallest roller coaster is in England; it stands 72 metres high. | A roller coaster works by using gravity. A cable hauls the train to the top of the highest incline. This gives it potential energy (energy of position). As the force of gravity makes the train speed down the first slope, potential energy is converted to kinetic energy (energy of movement). This is sufficient to carry it up the next incline. Each peak must be smaller than the last, because the train loses energy through friction.
