What is glass made from?
Glass is made from sand, limestone, soda ash (sodium carbonate), and recycled waste glass. Boric oxide is added to make heat-resistant glass (called Pyrex). The ingredients are heated to a high temperature in a furnace until they melt together. The molten glass from the furnace cools to form sheets, or may be moulded to make objects such as bottles.
Glass is used to make thousands of items, from window panes to aerial shields in space vehicles.
