Who built the first locomotives?
|
The first locomotive was built by Englishman Richard Trevithick in 1804. It weighed 5 tons and ran at 5 mph (8 kph), but was inclined to break the cast-iron rails it ran on. The next advance came in 1813 with George Stephenson's locomotive Blucher. In 1829 Stephenson built his famous Rocket, which reached a top speed of 29 mph (46.6 kph). | | Richard Trevithick's 1804 locomotive was the first machine to run on rails. |
