What were the first railways used for?

The first railways were used in mines for carrying rock and coal. They used horse-drawn wagons running on wooden rails. When steam locomotives replaced horses, they were still employed on mine railways. Within a few years, however, passenger-carrying railways were built. | | A steam train |
