What sort of motors power today's fast trains?
The original British high-speed trains used 200-horsepower diesel engines, and in 1973 set a record for diesels of 143 mph (230 kph). These were superseded by today's gas turbine (jet) engines. The fastest modern trains, such as the French TGV, use electric motors.
