How did early diving suits work?

An early diving suit
The first diving suits date from the 1600s. An enlarged metal helmet covered the diver's body down to the hips, with holes for the arms. Air pumped through a hose into the 'suit' enabled the diver to breathe. The pressure of the air also kept the water out. A diver could only dive the length of the hose.
