What is a black hole?
When a giant star comes to the end of its life, it grows into a huge ball and blows itself apart in an explosion called a supernova. The material left collapses in on itself until it becomes a tiny point in space. The gravity in the area around the point is so strong that not even light can escape, which is why it is called a 'black hole.'
