Are the other planets like Earth?
Earth is a rocky planet with seas and solid land masses. It is shrouded in an atmosphere of gases, which animals and plants need in order to live. The atmosphere also protects life from harmful rays from the Sun. Venus is the only other rocky planet with an atmosphere, but its atmosphere contains burning clouds of sulphuric acid. The other rocky planets are Mercury and Mars. There are five gas planets, including two giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn. They are called gas planets because they are made up of liquids, such as hydrogen, which would turn to gas on Earth.
Jupiter has a solid core covered with deep layers of liquid hydrogen.
