Where did the planets come from?
All the material that makes up our solar system - the Sun, planets, moons, asteroids, and comets - is thought to have formed from a gigantic cloud of gas and dust in space. About 4,600 million years ago, this cloud began to swirl around and collapse inward (1). The centre heated up, and jets of gas shot out (2). The cloud flattened into a disk (3) and the hot core became the Sun. Other material slowly clumped together to become planets, moons, asteroids, and comets (4).
Our entire solar system was formed from a cloud of dust and gas.
