Have probes landed on other planets?
Two American Viking probes travelled to Mars in 1976, and each carried a landing craft that was parachuted down to the Martian surface. More than twelve Soviet Venera probes have landed on Venus, where the atmospheric pressure is 90 times that of Earth. Although all were crushed, several survived long enough to send back data and pictures.
One of two identical Viking landing craft or 'landers'.
