How did astronauts get to the Moon?
A completely new type of space-craft, called Apollo, was developed to send astronauts to the Moon and get them back safely. To launch Apollo into space, a new rocket, the Saturn V, was built. The Apollo spacecraft was made up of two parts: the command and service module, in which the astronauts travelled on their journey to and from the Moon, and the lunar module, which actually took them to the surface of the Moon.
Apollo's lunar module had four legs to support it on the Moon's surface.
