How long does it take the shuttle to get into space?
The space shuttle normally orbits Earth at a distance of about 155 miles (250 km). The journey into orbit takes about 10 minutes. The two rocket boosters fall away after the first 28 miles (45 km), which takes just two minutes. The fuel tank is jettisoned after eight minutes.
Apart from its rocket boosters and fuel tank, the space shuttle is a reusable spacecraft.
