How do astronauts get into space?
|
| The Ariane V rocket | Space starts only 93 miles (150 km) above Earth's surface, but getting there is a huge struggle against gravity. Spacecraft stay in orbit by travelling extremely fast. They must reach 17,400 mph (28,000 kph) in order not to fall back to Earth. To do this, they need powerful rocket motors.
