Does a star ever die?
A star does not shine forever. When the hydrogen gas in the centre is used up, the star can no longer make energy. It expands into a giant red star (1) and the core heats up (2). In some stars, the outer layers disappear into space, and the star collapses (3), leaving a small, dense star called a white dwarf. Other, larger stars end with a huge explosion, called a supernova (4).
Stars bigger than the Sun end in massive explosions called supernovae.
