What is an eclipse?
An eclipse happens when the Moon casts a shadow on Earth (an eclipse of the Sun), or Earth casts a shadow on the Moon (an eclipse of the Moon). During a total eclipse of the Sun, the Sun disappears from some places on Earth. There are about seven minutes of darkness as the Moon's shadow moves across Earth's surface. During an eclipse of the Moon, the Moon goes dark as it moves through the shadow cast by Earth.
During a total eclipse of the Sun, the Sun is completely hidden by the Moon. During a partial eclipse, only part of the Sun is hidden.
