What was the Great Trek?
|
In 1806 the British captured the Dutch Cape Colony in southern Africa. Many Dutch farmers, called Boers, resented British rule. In 1836, they set off north-eastward with their families on a Great Trek. They settled north of the Orange and Vaal rivers. The wealthy republics they founded now form part of South Africa.
