What kind of houses did the Plains Indians live in?
|
In the 1400s, many Indians of the Great Plains were farmers. They built large, dome-shaped houses called lodges. A lodge had a wooden frame, covered with soil and turf. Entry was through a covered passage. Inside, there was a fireplace in the centre of the lodge. A hole in the roof above let out the smoke. Around the walls were wooden platforms that were used as beds or seats. Before the introduction of the horse by the Spanish, the Plains Indians used dogs for hunting.
