Who led the first expedition to the South Pole?
Roald Amundsen of Norway landed his party on Antarctica in 1911. Amundsen and four men started for the South Pole on sleds drawn by dogs. They reached the Pole in less than two months. The journey back was even quicker, and everyone returned safely. Soon afterward, Robert F. Scott's British expedition also reached the Pole. But none of the five men survived the return trip.
