Who was the first European to cross Africa from east to west?
In 1874, H. M. Stanley set out with 350 others from Bagamoyo on Africa's east coast. After exploring Lake Victoria, the expedition reached the Congo River. Despite attacks from hostile tribes, they followed the river all the way to the sea on the west coast. The great journey took 999 days. Only 114 people survived.
