What was the Domesday Book?
William of Normandy conquered England in 1066. In 1086, he ordered a survey of all his English lands to check that he was receiving the rent and taxes to which he was entitled. His officers travelled around the kingdom asking a series of questions, such as the name of each estate and who owned it. The answers were written in the Domesday Book. It gives us a detailed picture of what life was like in the Middle Ages.
