What were the Crusades?
The Crusades were religious wars fought between the 11th and 13th centuries. They were fought to win back the Holy Lands from non-Christians. The First Crusade began in 1076, when Palestine was captured by Turkish Muslims. The crusading armies were usually led by knights on horseback. Foot soldiers fought with spears and crossbows.
