How were cathedrals built in the 12th century?
|
During the 12th century, a new style of church architecture was introduced which meant that buildings were much larger and more elaborate than before. This style was known as Gothic architecture. The inside of the cathedral was enlarged by building aisles of columns on each side. Arches were built on the outside of cathedrals to support the enormous weight of the roof. Each wall was pierced with windows, which let in light and made the walls lighter.
