Why do reptiles flick out their tongues?
|
The monitor lizard can flick out its tongue. Sometimes the tongue touches the ground, and sometimes it waves in the air. The tongue collects tiny chemical traces and takes them back to the mouth, where nerve cells figure out what the chemicals mean. By doing this, the monitor can pick up signals about food dangers nearby. Many lizards and snakes use their tongues in the same way.
