How do we know about the past?
|
We find out about the past from fossils. If a prehistoric animal died in shallow, muddy water, its body may have been covered with layers of silt which eventually formed solid rock. The soft parts decayed but the skeleton slowly absorbed minerals and hardened in the rock to become a fossil. Millions of years later, if the rock is worn away, we can find the fossil.
