How did the horse evolve?
|
The horse evolved from a fox-sized forest animal called Hyracotherium that lived 50 million years ago. Its descendants, such as Mesohippus and Merychippus, grew larger and grazed on open grassland. The number of toes dwindled from four to one, and the animals ran on tiptoe. This improved their running speed. Eventually the modern horse evolved.
