Why did animals begin to live on land?
The very earliest creatures lived in water. Then plants began to grow on the land. These provided a new source of food, and some animals left the water. They developed lungs, instead of gills, for breathing. Their fins developed into legs to help them move on land. The first to come on land were the amphibians such as Ichthyostega. They had fishlike heads and tails, but stronger backbones and stout legs.
