Which animal is called the sea canary?
The beluga whale, which lives in Arctic seas, is called the sea canary. This is because it makes a wide variety of whistling and chirping noises. In the summer, belugas move into the mouths of rivers to feed on migrating salmon. They sometimes gather in large numbers to feed, and their canary-like sounds can be heard from above the water as well as from below. Adult belugas are white, but their young are darker in colour.
