How did the right whale get its name?
|
Sad though it may seem, early whalers gave the right whale its name. They considered it to be the 'right' whale to catch because it was a slow swimmer and floated after it had been killed. Some species of whale sink after they have been killed and would have been difficult for early whalers to tow back to their ship. Right whales were nearly hunted to extinction.
