How does the sea otter eat clams?
|
The sea otter lives in the Pacific waters off northern California. It has developed a clever method of opening clams and mussel shells to reach the food inside. Lying on its back on the surface of the sea, the sea otter places a large stone on its chest. It then strikes the clam or mussel shell against the stone until the shell shatters. The sea otter then eats the flesh inside the shell.
