What were the ice ages?
The ice ages were periods in history when the Earth became extremely cold. The last ice age ended about 10,000 years ago. Near the poles, a lot of water froze into ice. This meant that there was less water in the sea and the sea level dropped, leaving large areas of land uncovered.
