What is a glacier?
|
A glacier is a river of ice that forms in cold regions high up in the mountains or near the poles. It slides very slowly downhill, a few metres each year. It carries a mass of rocks, which scrape away the valley walls and floor. It later deposits rocks and earth in huge ridges called moraines. If a glacier reaches the sea, large pieces break off and float away as icebergs.
