How can we use the energy from atoms?
|
When a uranium atom is split, it releases neutrons which shoot off into surrounding atoms and split them, too. This splitting keeps going in what is called a chain reaction. It gives out a lot of energy in the form of heat, which can be used to generate electricity in a nuclear power station. Rods of uranium are placed inside the reactor. Control rods made of boron are put between the uranium rods to control the reaction. Water is pumped through the reactor under pressure and absorbs the heat. This water is carried to the steam generator, where its heat is used to boil a separate supply of water into steam. The steam is fed to a turbine. It spins the turbine, which turns the generator and so produces electricity. The used steam then travels to the condenser, where it is turned back into water and fed back to the steam generator to be reused.
