What is virtual reality?
Virtual reality is a computerised fantasy world that seems like the real thing. To enter it, the user wears a helmet with a computer screen inside. As the user moves his/her head, different parts of the ‘world’ appear within the screen. In some virtual reality programs the user moves a joystick to make the images move on the screen. Sometimes sensors attached to the body enable the user to 'touch' things. The science of virtual reality is still at an early stage. It takes powerful computers to run even a simple program. Simulators used to train aircraft pilots and tank commanders use a form of virtual reality.
