How is coal mined?
Most coal is mined by either the 'longwall' or 'room-and-pillar' method. In longwall mining a giant coal cutter runs down the coal face removing coal as it goes. In room-and-pillar mining the coal is removed from chambers, but pillars of coal are left behind to support the roof.
