How is iron extracted from iron ore?
|
Iron ore contains other substances besides iron. The iron is extracted in a tall tower called a blast furnace. The ore, mixed with limestone and coke, is fed through the top. Then very hot air is blown in through pipes at the bottom of the furnace. The iron melts, and the other materials rise to the top as slag. The iron is drained off from the bottom.
