What are materials?
Materials are what we use to make the things we need. The first people used natural materials such as rock, wood, plant fibres, and animal bones and skins. Then they learned how to make new materials. They made clay pots and baked them at high temperatures to harden them. They discovered how to make iron, bronze, copper, and other metals. Glass was being made as long as 5,000 years ago. Today, we use more materials than ever, including a wide range of plastics.
