What is a cell?
A cell is the basic building block of almost every living thing. Plant cells have a rigid wall made of a material called cellulose. Animal cells do not have a rigid wall. Inside all cells is a fluid called cytoplasm, containing the nucleus and other small bodies. The nucleus is the cell's control centre. The chloroplasts in plant cells help trap the energy from sunlight. The energy is used to turn carbon dioxide and water into food for the plant.
