A submarine contains a pressurised compartment where the crew lives and works. The space between this and the outer hull contains a series of fuel, oil, water, waste, and ballast tanks. When the ballast tanks are flooded with sea water, the submarine becomes heavier than the surrounding water and sinks. When air is pumped into the tanks, forcing the water out, the submarine becomes lighter and rises.
