What is the largest ship afloat?
The world's largest ships are cargo vessels. The largest of these are the supertankers that carry oil around the world. The oil tanker Jahre Viking was the largest ship afloat in 1999. It is 458 metres long and 69 metres across. Its cavernous hull extends 25 metres below the water-line. When it is fully loaded with crude oil, it weighs 565,000 tonnes.
