How is the space shuttle moved to its launch pad?
The space shuttle is prepared for launch inside a building at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. It is moved to the launch pad six kilometres away by the world's largest crawler transporter. This giant is 40 metres long and weighs 2,700 tonnes. It travels on four double caterpillar tracks. The tracks are moved by electric motors driven by generators powered by diesel engines.
