What was the deepest diving vessel?
On January 23, 1960, the bathyscaphe Trieste (a kind of submarine) descended 10,916 metres into the deepest part of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. No one has dived deeper. Trieste's crew of two were protected inside a thick metal sphere beneath a large float partly filled with gasoline. When sea water flooded into the float, Trieste sank. To return to the surface, it dropped metal weights.
