How did the Pioneer space probes work?
|
Pioneer 10 and 11 were the first spacecraft to visit the outer Solar System. They were designed to find out if a spacecraft could travel through the asteroid belt, a swarm of rocks orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. Most spacecraft use solar cells to make electricity from sunlight. Pioneer 10 and 11 travelled so far from the Sun that solar cells would not work. Instead, they carried nuclear power generators to make electricity.
