What is on the surface of the Moon?
The Moon's surface is covered with dust and rocks that have been smashed to pieces by showers of rocklike objects called meteorites. It is pitted with craters, also caused by meteorites. Most are just tiny dents, but some are hundreds of kilometres wide. Some areas of the Moon look dark. People once thought these areas were seas. They were formed when meteorites cracked the Moon's surface. Molten rock bubbled up from below and grew hard. There are also many high mountains and deep valleys.
