How did the universe begin?
Many scientists believe that all the material of the Universe was once crammed together in one place. Then, about 15,000 million years ago, an explosion or 'Big Bang' occurred. The material of the universe flew out in all directions, forming galaxies and other bodies, mainly gas and dust. The effects of this explosion are still continuing, causing the universe to expand. The galaxies still seem to be rushing away from each other.
