How hot is the Sun?
|
The Sun is a vast ball of glowing gas. At the heart of the Sun, temperatures are thought to be 15,000,000 degrees C! The heat is created in the core, or centre, by the nuclear fusion of hydrogen atoms. This is similar to the process that occurs in an exploding hydrogen bomb. Marks on the Sun, called sunspots, appear dark only because they are 1,200 degrees Centigrade. cooler than the surrounding gas. Solar flares are great tongues of gas. All life on Earth is dependent on the light and heat from the Sun.
